Seguramente habrán notado que los precios de los productos en oferta rara vez son números completos. ¿Por qué abundan tanto los precios terminados en .99 o en .95? ¿Pueden unos céntimos realmente marcar tanta diferencia? Siempre me pregunté por qué los comerciantes en vez de poner el precio 9.99 no ponían el producto directamente a 10. Indagando sobre la historia de esta práctica descubrí que su origen no está del todo claro, pero se sospecha que comenzó por una razón muy concreta. Se cree que los propietarios de los primeros comercios pusieron los precios con decimales para obligar a sus empleados a abrir la caja registradora y registrar la venta, evitando así que estos pudiesen engañarlos y quedarse con dinero sin registrar. Pero también existe una razón psicológica para este tipo de precios, el denominado “efecto del dígito izquierdo”. Como su nombre indica, este efecto explica por qué el primer numero que vemos es mucho más efectivo que los siguientes. Si bien a nivel matemático la diferencia es mínima, a nivel psicológico la distancia entre 59.99 y 60.00 es enorme justamente porque el dígito de la izquierda nos influye más que los siguientes. En el año 2005, Maoj Thomas y Vicki Morwitz de la New York University Stern School of Business, lograron explicar la base teórica del efecto de dígito izquierdo. La psicología de la toma de decisiones nos dice que para comparar los precios, los humanos tenemos que traducirlos en cantidades abstractas que luego tendremos en mente mientras tomamos la decisión de comprar o no. En este punto los investigadores encuentran el origen del efecto.

Rainbow Quinoa Salad\r
1 cup quinoa\r
2 cups vegetable broth\r
1 cup corn\r
2 carrots, grated\r
1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved\r
1 cup red cabbage, shredded\r
1 cup broccoli florets\r
¼ cup olive oil\r
3 tbsp white wine vinegar\r
1 tsp Dijon mustard\r
1 tsp honey\r
salt and pepper \r
\r
In a medium saucepan, combine quinoa and vegetable broth. Bring it to a boil.\r
Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 15 minutes.\r
Turn off heat and allow quinoa to sit for 5-10 minutes.\r
Allow quinoa to cool completely.\r
In a large bowl combine cooled quinoa with corn, carrots, cherry tomatoes, red cabbage and broccoli florets.\r
In a small bowl whisk olive oil, white wine vinegar, Dijon mustard, honey, salt and pepper.\r
Pour dressing over salad and stir until its evenly dressed.\r
Store in the refrigerator for 4-5 days.\r

1 cup quinoa\r

2 cloves garlic, minced\r
1 English cucumber, diced\r
2 tomatoes, diced\r
¼ cup white onion\r
fresh parsley\r
fresh mint\r
¼ cup olive oil\r
1 lemon\r
salt and pepper\r
\r
In a medium saucepan, combine quinoa and vegetable broth. Bring it to a boil.\r
Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 15 minutes.\r
Turn off heat and allow quinoa to sit for 5-10 minutes.\r
Allow quinoa to cool completely.\r
In a large bowl combine cooled quinoa with cucumber, tomato, white onion, parsley and mint.\r
Dress with olive oil, lemon juice, salt and pepper.\r
Store in the refrigerator for 4-5 days.\r

One Pan Mexican Quinoa\r
1 cup quinoa\r
1 can black beans, rinsed and drained\r
1 can corn, drained\r
1 red bell pepper, finely diced\r
1 clove garlic, minced\r
1 jalapeno, minced (optional)\r
1 cup salsa\r
1½ cup vegetable broth\r
1 lime\r
fresh cilantro to taste\r
\r
In a large skillet combine quinoa, black beans, corn, red bell pepper, garlic, jalapeno, salsa and vegetable broth.\r
Stir well and bring mixture to a boil.\r
Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 20-25 minutes or until liquid is all absorbed.\r
Turn off heat and all quinoa to sit for an additional 5 minutes. \r
Finish with fresh lime juice and freshly chopped cilantro.\r
Store in the refrigerator for 4-5 days.\r
